Entertainment with a View
Mr. Russell's gift to the community, Lake Martin Amphitheater was built in 1998 by Russell Lands Inc. on a bluff overlooking beautiful Lake Martin. It is managed by Lake Martin Arts Council, a 501c3 organization, to provide entertainment, art and cultural events for the Lake Martin community.
Throughout the course of the year, company-organized events attract thousands to the Lake Martin area. The amphitheater's family-oriented, feet-in-the-cool-grass atmosphere is the ideal setting for a variety of entertainment opportunities. The venue's many events include Memorial Day and Labor Day concerts, Alex City Jazz Fest and the amazing Fourth of July Fireworks Blast.
Currently the Russell Forest Trail system consists of approximately 40 miles of equestrian/bicycle and hiking trails that are open to property owners of the Russell Lands developments. Plans call for the trail system to encompass the majority of the company's property and connect Russell Lands' developments with a variety of trail types. Already in place is an extensive equestrian trail that ranges from one of the company's original developments, Willow Point, to the company's newest development, The Ridge.
The trails meander through the property owned by Russell Lands, with minimal impact to the land and limited access to public roads. With three levels of trails - equestrian, hiking and electric vehicles - the Russell Lands "family" will have multiple opportunities to enjoy nature along the way to Russell Crossroads.
Community Service
From the earliest days of the company, the Russell family has understood well its role in the community and has made giving back a cornerstone of its corporate culture and guiding philosophy. Evident in all of Russell Lands endeavors - whether through little league baseball sponsorships to city festivals to non-profit organizations - community involvement is paramount. The latest example of this is the donation of $25 million by Ben and Luanne Russell to the Birmingham's Children's Hospital Campus in support of the hospital's "Keeping Promises" campaign to build a new facility there. With its anticipated opening in 2012, the new facility and campus will be renamed the Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children in honor of Mr. Russell's grandfather, whom the younger Russell describes as "the origin of all things Russell in Alabama."
In 1987, Ben and Luanne Russell began dreaming of building a place for children and families on Lake Martin. The dream became a reality in 1990 with the dedication ceremonies of Children's Harbor, a not-for-profit organization. The mission of Children's Harbor is to strengthen the mental health of children who have long-term serious illnesses and their families. This mission is fulfilled through programs of counseling, education, social services and financial assistance. These services are provided at the Family Center at Children's Hospital. Facilities for camping and adventure activities are provided through the beautiful Lake Martin campus. It is designed around a picturesque New England seaside village motif and features the Plymouth Lighthouse and a charming little early American church - Children's Chapel. The lakeside setting is also home to Church in the Pines, Harbor House, Mariners' Adventure Camp, Mariner's Adventure Course, Mariner's Retreat Center, Time Capsule Park, and the Children's Harbor administrative headquarters.
Founded in 1987 by Ben and Luanne Russell, CARE Alabama is the only statewide campaign that raises money for CARE, one of the world's leading humanitarian organizations fighting global poverty. In over 70 developing countries, CARE helps poor families create lasting solutions to their most threatening problems. It combines the strength of communities, donors and an expert staff to win victories over poverty every day.
